We hope that everyone who stayed in Stromness and all our visitors enjoyed the 65th Stromness Shopping Week!
Appearing during Shopping Week were The Chipolatas custodians of an ever-evolving tradition, blending the old and the new, continue to cross cultures and create new genres with their unique and universally-acclaimed show Gentlemen of the Road. Transcending trends, capturing hearts and crossing boundaries, those 3 actors / musicians / clowns at the pinnacle of their powers flowed seamlessly together - steady, joyful, resonant - in a celebratory performance. They performed for two days only. Also appearing were the Voodoo Unicycles whose amazing unicycle acrobatics were seen on Friday and Saturday of Shopping Week.
The award winning Stromness Royal British Legion Pipe Band played selections through the week in various locations, and the Shopping Week Commitee were delighted that the Rendall Pipe Band were also able to play on the Wednesday and Saturday of Shopping Week.
Orkney band Genuine Draft were Shopping Week's Resident Band and played at various times throughout the week at the pierhead and in local pubs at night and of course at the open air dance on Saturday night where they played from the earlier time of 7pm until Shopping Week came to an end at 11pm. We also had The Vagabonds, a new young cover band from Stromness formed in the summer of 2011 who performed at the pierhead throughout the week. Those boys were another example of the great talent we have in depth in Orkney!
Following its great inaugural success in last year's Shopping Week the Shopping Week Hack continued to build on that success.
As usual we had all the old favourites such as the Yard of Ale, the Beer Race, Holms Swim, and the Shopping Week 10k Race.
There was a full programme for the children of sports, round the town race, workshops, with many activities for them to take part in.
The Community Centre was open for visitors who hopefully enjoyed the Flower Club and WRI displays.
